Phu Quoc Island: Duong Dong
All flights into Phu Quoc arrive at Duong Dong airport. It was built by the French colonists in 1930s and developed during Vietnam War. In 1975, following the fall of Saigon, this airport continued to serve commercial flights. Most tourists will only see Duong Dong on arrival and departure but if you have the time it is worth doing a little exploring here.
Like any town in Vietnam, Duong Dong is centered around the market. It is a hive of activity early in the morning and also a great spot to be as the boats return to harbour at sunset.
You can watch from Cau Temple surrounding the lighthouse at the end of Bach Dang Street or practice your Vietnamese ordering a 'Ca Phe Sua Da' at the nearby coffee house.
Cruise the streets after dark and sample some of the local street food. Perhaps the easiest place to do this is at the Night Market which opens around 1600 hr on 'Vo Thi Sau' near the temple.
If you are here for Tet (Vietnamese New Year) there is a spectacular fireworks display which takes place near the stadium on Nguyen Trung Truc.
